MotoGP - or is it?, Kit turns 916 family -
and MV Agusta - into Ducati GP looklike by MCN
Ducati's MotoGP contender hasn't hit the track
in anger yet, but a British firm is already offering
a road going replica of the Desmosedici.
QB Carbon has created the kit and any owner of the 916 and its derivatives (from
748 to 998) can take advantage. The kit will aslo fit an MV Agusta F4, even though
it has an inline four layout rather than the v-twin engine of the 916.
QB Carbon's John Merrill said: "When we first
saw the MotoGP bike we loved it. I'm sure we are
not alone. There are thousands of Ducati owners
and with this kit they can update their bikes without
having to spend a fortune. We spent ages building
clay models to get it just right.
It has taken more then three months to develop. QB has been meticulous in copying
the Duke, even down to the position of the air intakes.
"This bike is the centre point of our stand at the NEC Show and we wanted
it to be really special," said Merrill.
"It has been a tricky and long job but the final result is worth it."
According to Merrill the hardest part was getting
the underseat exhaust to fit. It is a totally different
shape from the traditional 916-style underseat-exiting
exhausts. And the seat unit is smaller.
For the MotoGP look a new sub-frame had to be built to house the pipe, finding
new positions for the bike's electronic brain and wiring, usually located under
the seat.
There is also a version of the
kit which retains the standard pipes. Merrill said
of it: "There's
something about it that looks so right."
The kit can be bought in a series of stages.
The fairing is available in either glass-fibre or carbon and QB can have it painted
in whichever design you want at an extra cost.
The resculpted tank comes only in carbon and you will have to buy a new sub-frame
if you want to fit the GP seat unit and exhaust system.
If you fancy the combination of MotoGP-style four-cylinder
power and the look of the Ducati, you can bolt
the QB Carbon kit to an MV Agusta F4.
QB have been racing this MV in the Btitish KRC Endurance championship and finished
a very respectable third overall, against R1's, Fireblades and GSX-R1000s.
It has a carbon sub-frame, Ducati MotoGP-style fairing and under-seat exhaust,
a larger tank and airbox, and PFM discs with a Magura master cylinder. The swingarm,
yokes and wheels are magnesium and the steering damper and shock are Ohlins.
The blueprinted engine makes 130bhp at the rear wheel and will wheelie off the
throttle in the first three gears.
